ETCH-A-SKETCH WILL GIVE MANY YEARS OF ENJOYMENT
IF USED WITH REASONABLE CARE
by alyssa w christensen
MAGIC Etch-A-Sketch SCREEN is like
a mirror in what it means.
I can sketch as many etches as I please
into the gray, sandy screen tiny flecks
of Etch-A-Sketch flesh
part like a little Red Sea. I weave
the white knobs HORIZONTAL DIAL,
VERTICAL DIAL up and down,
up and down. And when my left and right
move syncopated and smooth,
new lines are drawn
like a road on a map
or a wrinkle on a face. But still,
so much gray space.
nevermind, I’m finished.
SHAKE GENTLY TO ERASE.

Fragrant all caps and usage of meter pleases. Nice use of metaphor. Destiny is a thing to be shaped by one’s own hands…I do get the temptation to ‘shake gently to erase’–very often…thx.
Naw. Quasi’ll be back when the flea gets him again.
I liked this one as well for its playfulness. But yeah. Been kinda quiet around here lately. It does that sometimes. We’ll hit dry spells and then suddenly everyone will start commenting again. Let’s hope it picks up. And I guess Quasimofo really did leave. That’s too bad. He had great things to say.
Damn, we need some comments up in here! It’s like a ghost town lately.
I like this one because it reminds me of the time I spent with my etch a sketch in my youth. It was magical. I used to spend all day making the screen completely black, and then watch the magnet move around like a streaker on the loose or something.
This poem just brought me back there, so nice work.
