early evening

After the first glass of bourbon,
sitting in the shade, smelling charcoal
turn to dust and chicken skin
to gold, the grass and weeds

Thanks Tara. I’ll second that “yay” for summer nights – we’re finally getting some in Minnesota.

Loverly! So understated that it enhances the sublime truth of an evening such as this. I like to think that the lack of punctuation at the end implies the long hours this evening rolls through and all the evenings to come.

If I still partook of alcohol and was painted into this picture, I would substitute the bourbon for a glass of red wine, but for the tone and imagery and scent of this poem bourbon is perfect.

    Yay for summer nights!
