Last-Minute Message for a Time Capsule
By Philip Appleman
I have to tell you this, whoever you are:
that on one summer morning here, the ocean
pounded in on tumbledown breakers,
a south wind, bustling along the shore,
whipped the froth into little rainbows,
and a reckless gull swept down the beach
as if to fly were everything it needed.
I thought of your hovering saucers,
looking for clues, and I wanted to write this down,
so it wouldn’t be lost forever —
that once upon a time we had
meadows here, and astonishing things,
swans and frogs and luna moths
and blue skies that could stagger your heart.
We could have had them still,
and welcomed you to earth, but
we also had the righteous ones
who worshipped the True Faith, and Holy War.
When you go home to your shining galaxy,
say that what you learned
from this dead and barren place is
to beware the righteous ones.

  1. Apocalyptic and Prophetic as if to say: “Yeah, the world is going to end, because of all the people who believe it will and go berserk like hell trying to prevent it [thus making it come true]…no more Nostradamus or ‘Left Behind’ series for you! Under the veil, here, I sense commentary on the Iraq War…good going! It’s time everyone got off the fence via fiction!
I agree with Misener: ‘great science fiction’; My main sci-fi dude was Vonnegut (not to be posh or anything] and i think of ‘The Sirens of Titan’ … and ‘Cowboy Bebop’ from anime acclaim.
Instead of Heinlein, I picture Shawn Misener ‘Mordeeb’, prince of the Fremin’, riding a gigantic Dune Worm with Scarlet Johansen by his side and the band ‘Toto’ jamming on their guitars for theme music. I’m not sure in this vision what they are battling against…perhaps a filibuster?
    Stellar! Thanks Mr. Appleman.
