everything is so far away that travel seems failed from the start
by nicoke kuwik
I seem to be convinced
that I am dehydrated
at all times
“Water?” I ask the boy
with the grey eyes full of salt
He hands me bottles and glasses
and cups and mugs
and we smile at each other
in grey cars and
upon grey carpet
I deflate as the blood escapes
and I wonder if I will ever make it
to the desert by car
again

  1. I’ve really come to enjoy Ms. Kuwik’s monthly submissions. Her poems are cut and dry [especially this poem of desert…hehe] and delicious to sink teeth into like a damned fine burrito (my favorite food).
Poem of travel taps vein with title and could be so true of life concerning other motivations as well: relationships, jobs, …many aspects of life. With so much going on it’s easy to be overwhelmed and just want to be or not put forth any effort.
But the poem’s content took a different turn than i expected from title and dealt with dehydration and specifically a trip to desert. I mean, yeah, thirst and the desert are full of connotations and opens up much in the way one could read the poem. So i suppose my impressions of the title and poem main body are related after all perhaps.
Cool how first line talks of dehydration … gives feeling of lacking, loss, emptiness…and the need for something filling in order to function and do what you are supposed to do, whatever that may be in life. Even author’s name changes from Nicole to ‘Nicoke’ , intentional?, freudian slip cacique?, or typo since ‘l’ is right next to ‘k’? Hmm. I could go for a nice refreshing Coke in the desert, even though water is better for you.
The use of ‘grey’ intrigued me too. A hybrid color betweem black and white..a fence-sitting color, hazy color, not clear.
    Anyway, i ramble. Any thoughts?
