Daring Candlelit Giblets

Daring Candlelit Giblets
by halifax
Vyborg Nana’s banana cream pie
Was invented from necessity.
A feared black Baltic verboten curse fruit,
Brought five-thousand nautical miles
North by a scrap iron boat,
Whose rusty faith won’t let her sink.
She won’t have it been for not.
Thin whipped cream
Gargles screams under her whirring machine.
Brooding on the Gangut under her watchful spot torch
She thrusts over the counter with a heavy canister of flame.
“Burn an’ shrivel, you caramel babies!
I’ve birthed verse din you!,” peanut teeth muttered.
The apron is covered in swatted finger marks
And charming accidents.
Hard-packed dough,
On buttered metal and bean baked,
Worked with stiff blame and
Wickedly forgiving hands
Earns a serving place at the head.
Up at her in gloaming proximity
If not had it been for wont,
Her deft blade work of turkey mercy,
Would have had us fainted from the sight.

  1. It is unlikely anyone would get that Daring is a class of dinghy. A dinghy is a type of small boat, often carried (or towed) by a larger boat. Doesn’t add much but I wanted to explain the title more.

  2. Yeah, i’ve been cracking up over this one since last week…especially that name, Vyborg Nana…which brings to mind some manic cooking cyborg who’s sentimental and homely at the same time. The mention of ‘verboten’ and ‘iron’ boats (and Baltic) makes me think German.
In any case, seems to be a lot of technique used here aptly with balance and energy. Edgar Lee Masters would be proud. Might i suggest ‘The Ginsu Knife Creek Collection’?
