We’re on another back road

We’re on another back road with the sun in our eyes
by Brianna Leigh Smith
We’re on another back road with the sun in our eyes
and the windows are rolled down and all I can hear
is forty miles per hour and I like to look at the shadows
that form on your face, as the sun moves across the sky
and the way the corners of your mouth fall into a natural smirk
and your hand is resting on my thigh as if to assure you
that all of this is real, that all five senses are in order,
and I have that sense of calm when I stare at you watching
the road, and I just want this moment in a mason jar
and when I open the lid, I want to smell apples
growing firm in the autumn sun and I want to hear the wind
getting louder, drowning out all other sounds.
except for the low gentle hum of all the love that we’ve made.

  1. One-Sentence-Poems Rule! Such deep breathing deep thoughts. It’s the shared moments with friends/lovers that are the most vivacious and life-affirming. Wake up and smell the roses…the country air, feel the wind in your hair, see taste and hear all around you. Stop time and be in it and of it.
Upon reading the title and first line: “We’re on another back road with the sun in our eyes” i wasn’t for sure if that was a good thing or bad thing. It could go either way. That sort of curiosity compelled me to read the main body and find out. Sun in your eyes could be blinding and confusing or a kind of basking in the glow of the sun emanating all around you {the latter is the case}. Being on a back road could mean you’re in B.F.E. isolated or that you’re in the crux of a natural paradise [also the case]. Nice!
“…and your hand is resting on my thigh as if to assure you
that all of this is real…” love it. i appreciated how the writer sets the scene so quickly at beginning of poem and very smoothly with flow unleashes so much emotionally-charged imagery.
    Wonderful Autumn poem!
