We could have been
friends if not for him–
though we never could
have really been friends.
Your breasts bent toward
his hat–his face–
as you closed the bar.
I had tripped on the
way in.
He said something about
dirty fantasies in a text–
which you’ll act out
with him soon, if not
tonight.
Though he never remembered
the color of my hair,
maybe he’s noticed
that yours is the same
shade.
It’s unfortunate that I
began to hate you when
you refused to serve me.
I’m not like that.
And I’m not jealous.
At least not of him.
We could have been
friends…
But I don’t work, and
you work at his
favorite bar.
But you dress up, and
I don’t.
But you’re appropriate, probably,
and he probably treats
you well.
And you don’t like me,
because I knew him
and you want him.
He’s really not that
good in bed, and
he has a small
dick
Let’s shake hands.
We should be friends.
absolutely love this poem! it hits hard without trying.
The dynamics of love triangles are fascinating and speak volumes for our human nature. Structure is nice and tight in 8 stanzas delivering a back and forth ‘me, her, him’ observations patiently with resolve getting to the heart of the matter.
Poem starts out direct and ‘spelling it out’ for reader: “We could have been friends if not for him–
though we never could have really been friends.” So from here, basically, we just have to figure out who the ‘we’ is and fill in the blanks–the ‘whys’ and ‘why-nots’.
Life is funny and strange things happen all the time to set in motion friendships/nonfriendships and the drama that goes with it–that’s captured/illustrated in detail here. Great read! thx for sharing!
