What’s Doing This Weekend

What’s Doing This Weekend
by Patrick Smith
Old mustache farmers basement rock
Sunday suits and hats and drink
beets upstairs on boil.
A steaming vat breaks vegetable flame
falls from cracked ceiling into our laps
masonry bricks topple trees set them free
to dance away from the falling house
roots unrestrained in rocks and soil
to wheel and twine in green ballet.
Lightning flashes in the east or
is it rockets as insurgent troops
march past our hidden camp
where sleepless pajama children
cry and quickstep file through halls
and doors clutching books and bears.
