Poetry Wins a National Magazine Award
American Society of Magazine Editors’ Digital ‘Ellie’ recognizes innovations in magazine media
CHICAGO — The Poetry Foundation, publisher of Poetry magazine, is proud to announce that its Poetry magazine podcast has won the National Magazine Award for Digital Media in the “Podcasting†category. Fellow finalists in the Podcasting category were the Harvard Business Review, The New Yorker, Slate, and Tablet.
This is the first Ellie for the Poetry Foundation, which was previously nominated in 2010 in the category of “Multimedia Feature or Package†for the Chicago Poetry Tour.
Christian Wiman, editor of Poetry magazine, is struck by how well poetry and technology cooperate: “I sometimes think that the Internet, which changes every time you blink, is actually returning poetry to its ancient origins as an oral art form. Or who knows, maybe poetry, like a purifying agent, is changing the Internet into a place that can accommodate a deeper kind of consciousness. Either way, the Poetry podcast is one marriage between art and technology that seems to work, and we all feel very grateful to the judges for noticing.â€
“How wonderful it is to get recognized for talking about poetry,†said Don Share, senior editor of Poetry magazine. “The podcast fulfills part of Poetry founder Harriet Monroe’s dream—to cultivate a wider appreciation for the art.†Poetry Foundation president John Barr adds, “It’s remarkable to see the oldest of the little magazines—Poetry turns 100 next year—receive this award in the newest of media.â€
The monthly podcast features lively discussion between Wiman and Share, who talk to poets and critics, debate magazine content, and share their poem selections with listeners. Founded in 1912 and the oldest monthly magazine in the English-speaking world devoted to verse, Poetry remains committed to Harriet Monroe’s original mission: to showcase the best poetry written today. About Poetry Magazine
Founded in Chicago by Harriet Monroe in 1912, Poetry is the oldest monthly devoted to verse in the English-speaking world. Monroe’s “Open Door†policy, set forth in Volume I of the magazine, remains the most succinct statement of Poetry’s mission: to print the best poetry written today, in whatever style, genre, or approach. The magazine established its reputation early by publishing the first important poems of T.S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, Marianne Moore, Wallace Stevens, H.D., William Carlos Williams, Carl Sandburg, and other now-classic authors. In succeeding decades it has presented—often for the first time—works by virtually every major contemporary poet.
