  1. A lot of things flutter, fall, and die in the wind. A laugh is surely symbolic of what joy can seem at times–very fleeting. Conversely sadness may also appear to be temporary feeling although we tend to focus and fear the negative so it seems longer and more present than happiness–like searching for diamonds in a coal mine. Perhaps that maybe what the poet may be thinking–that the good things in life don’t last. It’s a frequent theme in the incessant groping for meaning in this darkness we call our existence. May you stumble upon a flashlight, friends, with fresh batteries.
