as a tiger dies in a recliner
as a tiger dies in a recliner
by D. George Gawlik
HE SMILES
(a breathless grimace of defiance)
HE STRETCHES AND YAWNS
(to cease the trembling in his limbs)
HE BEARS DOWN AND SQUINTS
(gazing upon colors whose names he can not remember)
HE EMITS A LOW GROWL
(images of all things lost bubbling up to the surface)
HIS TAIL FLICKS ANGRILY
(the flies have gathered thick around him)
HE LEAPS AT HIS PREY
(trying to tear down his own shadow tormenting him on the wall)
Amazing how well this aligns with my piece from yesterday.
I thought so too. They fit well together and give the week a very couching tiger feeling.
Is next week hidden dragon week?
Unfortunately it’s not. We don’t have that many tiger poems in the holster. I just noticed two come through and decided to pair them together.
With a couple of changes, this poem could be about a person dying of old age. I liked the way you used the (parens) as exposition.
it actually is, Alonso…about somebody or anyone who was once at the top of their game, then faded out and was left alone and I mean alone alone…
(And I’ve always wanted to say this…”Allons-y, Alonso!”)
