Almost Twenty

Almost Twenty
by Madeline Levine
Freedom is pacing
Sticky linoleum barefoot sucking on
Metaphors
Like sun-steeped cherry tomatoes
Till wee small hours they
Burst
On your tongue.
Dreamers, we live in limbo
We are watchers, sitters on concrete steps
Wanters, riding trains to nebulous
Nowhere’s—
Hoping when we get there we just might
Know where.
