The Miner
by JD DeHart
Between great rock walls
Scratching out his life
He operates the machines
Rides the elevator down
At home, the children
Expect a warm meal
His wife listens to the news
They pray for steady ground.

Reminds me of those coal mining movies, How Green Was My Valley, The Stars Looked Down, that hard-working, perilous life. Existential existence always on the edge. “Scratching out his life,” “They pray for steady ground” especially evoke this.
