My Baby

My Baby
by Dirk Michener
My baby was born
Unable to feel pain
He wears a handmade fat-suit
Made of cotton-balls and
Rabbit fur
My baby gets very cold
The fat-suit helps
There’s no furniture in my house
The walls are padded
I check my baby with a
Spyglass in the morning
Looking for pain-spots
My baby laughs
Maybe the baby is laughing
Because of pain
Like a tiny fat comedian
Who smokes too much
And makes fun of fat people
Mostly himself
And eats too much pizza
After the show.

  1. A distressing life situation, whose only relief may be laughter. The “tiny fat comedian” image is appropriately grim and wry. Our hopes that he’ll recover puts us in the ironic position of wishing he’ll be able someday to feel pain. But of course he will, or already does, for feeling so different. Keep braving this life, Dad.
