I am not
a swings a right fist defending
i hid behind, an apple core
with it’s head in the clouds
the horse shoe goes up north
to nail a notice to the cross
that a letter has gone missing

At the risk of tripping over the obvious, I think I almost get it. Proceeding right, “a” defends “i”, “n” is the horseshoe, “‘” nailing the notice to “t”, the cross, that the “o” is missing. And could “m” of the hidden “am” be the apple core with its head in the clouds (inverted)?
