Three Miles Deep
Three Miles Deep
by Julian DeWees
Tremble
Quiver
Synchronistic shockwave
Elated and kind
On the swivel
Architects’ abode
Blood-sweat-tears-brimstone-shy
Rebar-bent
Concrete-bound
Imprisoned and flighty
Delinquent handshakes
With God and satire
To vanquish our sins
For we have sinned
The latter denied
Secret and eaten alive
The adverse
Shrouded in honey
Blanketed by smiles
Dank with laughter
Inward exploration
Testing waters
Skinny-dipped anticipation
Lovers breath
Trusting
Denying
hating
lusting
Comatose actions
Disastrous reactions
Indwelling fear
Cerebral mangling
Light sucking depths
Three miles deep
Gasping
swimming
Never knowing
Up from down
Black
Quiet
Keep swimming
Spine-swept tears
Clawing
Reaching
Pulling
Heart skipping
Ascending
A shimmer
Light
Hope
triumph
Love
Reborn
Gnawed alive
Chewed to bits
Yet ALIVE
The descent begins after the line “Inward exploration.” Before that, things are obscure. Then come the outright contradictions,
“Trusting/Denying/hating/lusting;” oppositions, “Comatose actions/Disastrous reactions;” then disorientation, “Cerebral mangling…Never knowing Up from down;” struggle to survive, get to the surface, “Gasping/swimming,” “Clawing/Reaching/Pulling;” at seeing “Light/Hope;” then being “Reborn” to the murderous consequences of life, which probably prompted the inward descent, “yet” coming out of it “alive.” Horrendous but positive.
The first half is obscure. My mind is scattered yet focused on a point of artistic end. I really enjoyed this one. “Horrendous but positive.” I like that. Thanks for the comment.
