RATHER THAN RELATE

RATHER THAN RELATE
by Randall Nicholas

I’d like to hail a truck and have it take me a long way
without talking to the driver and drop me in a desert
where I stray off the road from here to there
into a place so dirty it is clean, the sun white, sky cerulean,
the land varying shades of red with barely clinging green,
and, crossing lizard, cow, and vulture paths, go on
in thinning shoes, fraying jeans, and disappearing cap until,
radioactive from the contaminated ground, I change
into an element the natives call spirit to wander off the map.
